Possible root canal

By: Patient Email Withheld, Milwaukee, WI
Need Dentist / Specialist: Yes
Provide Cost Estimate: Yes
X-rays Available: Yes
Case Summary
Root Canal
Teeth: 12,13
Last Full Mouth X-Ray: June 2006
Last Cleaning: June 2006
Case Description
I had a deep cavity in this particular tooth before moving to Milwaukee. My current dentist at the time was not sure if the tooth would require a root canal or not. I had the cavity taken care of back in June but the tooth hurts (rather badly) often now. The pain is constant over several days and it's very difficult for me to chew. I know that I should get this taken care of right away and I'm not afraid of the procedure but I've recently started as a grad student at UWM and the dental insurance with the school's insurance program only covers dental work if it's an injury. I'm trying to gauge what the cost might be as I'm fairly sure that I'll have to pay out of pocket.

When selecting a new doctor, consider the following:
  • Quality of Explanations: Compare dentist replies. Give preference to well-reasoned, detail-oriented, transparent explanations.
  • Experience & Qualifications: If a dentist has a practice listing, check their practice description, special training, typical office procedures and before & after case photographs.
  • Other Patients' Freedback: If a dentist has reviews, read other patients' reviews. The more reviews they have, the more likely it is that other patients' feeback is accurate.
  • Treatment Costs: Dental procedure costs vary from practice to practice and depend on a variety of factors. Because quality of patient care and treatment results vary from practice to practice most dentists will not "price-match" treatment fees of others.

Cost Estimate: $$789+298+1100
For teeth with symptoms, it is possible the bite is too high. First the teeth need to be evaluated, we check the bite, response to heat and cold and make an assessment. If a root canal is needed they cost $789 for bicuspids-. Then they will require a build up or filling or post and core. These can cost $189-$298 depending on the size and need of the tooth. Lastly, crowns are needed to protect the tooth from fracture. These can range from $849-1249 depending on type of crown selected and esthetic considerations. If all three steps aren''''''''t accomplished, fracture can occur necessitating extraction of the tooth. In our office we offer interest free financing that allow a patiet to spread out payments for up to a year interest free. If you visit our web sites at www.hamptondentalassociates.com or www.wisconsinreconstructiveimplantdentist.com you can see the quality of our work. We are not a "clinic" and we use the finest dental labs to insure beautiful long lasting restorations. Also, root canals do not hurt! They are done in 1 visit along with the core build ups to insure a strong tooth while waiting to get started on the crown. You can contact our office for a no charge consultation should you wish to. If you bring your x-rays it would help us assess your situation. I look forward to meeting you. Sincerely, Richard Winter D.D.S.F.A.G.D. Board of Directors Wisconsin Academy of General Dentistry

Cost Estimate: $800-ish for the root canal part
Hello there,

It sounds like it''''s one of the teeth and not both 12 and 13. Upper left teeth behind your canine tooth before the molars. An endodontic procedure for one of those teeth runs about 800''''ish. But remember a tooth that has a root canal becomes somewhat brittle and should have a crown placed over the top. These are also around 800 or so. If a tooth needs a root canal you either need to have it removed completely (not so good...) or get the procedure done. Our office has interest free financing for a year (or you can extend financing over several years) to lower your initial costs so you can get the treatment you really should have. Don''''t pull it if you don''''t have to, you will regret it. Call our office and swing by and we can check it out for you. Priority one is to get you out of pain and then we can figure out what the best option is for you. Take care,

Dr. Justen Toner
